4L70E Performance Transmissions InstallIt hasn’t been an easy life for our in-house project, Blue Bomber, a 2011 Chevy Silverado with a supercharged 4.8L. We have flogged it on big tracks and we have wasted plenty of tires on autocross courses. It has done everything exceptionally well with what little effort the truck really took to complete. We love it, and maybe we’ve loved it a little too hard. The stock 4L60E finally gave up the ghost and let us know it wasn’t happy with our thrill-seeking antics after too many track days and drift sessions. We weren’t 100 percent sure what we broke, but we did know that some of the forward gears weren’t present any longer. We needed a replacement but felt that the original-equipment rebuild was a recipe for a repeat offense. Blue Bomber hungered for something a bit more up to speed with its new capabilities. We reached out the transmission professionals at Gearstar for one of their Level Seven 4L70E transmissions. Stuffed inside the aluminum case is everything a tough trans needs. In it you will find Raybestos racing frictions, high capacity pump, hardened sun shell, high rev spring kit, 300M hardened output shaft, high hold second and fourth gear servos, a TransGo shift kit, and plenty more. We opted for the Yank 11-inch billet torque converter as icing on the cake. The Gearstar Level Seven 4L70E is rated to withstand way more power than Blue Bomber makes, giving our street bruiser a wider safety cushion. Installation was easier than you may think and everything bolted right back up. 4R75W Performance TransmissionsThe market offers a number of choices for automatic transmissions. One option would be a Ford 6R60/6R80 six-speed but they are hard to find. In addition they are expensive. Most relevant, the aftermarket hasn’t had a chance to address some of the issues that may cause problems in performance applications. We chose a Ford four-speed overdrive 4R75W performance transmission from Gearstar. Gearstar has developed years to finding the weaknesses in the popular automatic transmissions and then set about developing parts to correct them. These improved components increase the transmission’s capacity to handle more. More horse power, torque, weight, rear gear ratio, tire size, type of speedometer drive and the intended use of the vehicle. The transmissions is calibrated for shift feel using the these specs for each specific application. All transmissions are custom dyno tested with the converter for the equivalent of 100 miles to ensure that the entire package is in perfect operating condition before it is shipped to the customer.

Gearstar Custom Performance Transmission Installs
Gearstar Performance Transmissions is located on North Howard Street, not even a mile from the beating heart of downtown Akron. Owner Zack Farah founded Gearstar after spending years working for another transmission manufacturer that produced up to 100 transmissions and 300 converters per day. As time passed, Farah continually found himself drawn toward the high-performance transmission aspect of that business.
“At the time, very few companies were offering anything other than high-volume, mass-produced transmissions from the big manufacturers,” Farah said. “That certainly worked for that company, but I really took interest in high performance transmissions and custom installs. I decided to start my own business so I could focus on doing what I loved, and Akron was the perfect community to make that happen.”

Shifting Into OverdriveAt the outset of our Hot Rod Hauler project, one of our major goals was to increase fuel economy while maintaining the towing capacity of our ’73 Ford F-350. And while we will be building a new fuel-injected engine in the near future to help meet that goal, the first step in our attempt at getting better mileage was the installation of an E4OD overdrive automatic transmission from Gearstar Performance Transmissions.
200-4R Performance Transmission InstallBy: John Shapiro What keeps people from enjoying their car on long distance drives? The gas mileage generated from that old tired 3 speed auto trans. We visited Gearstar Transmissions in Akron, Oh. Which is locally owned and operated but are a national recognized transmission of choice by many of the magazine project cars and the Street Rodder Tour car for the past 10 years. Owner Zack showed us a ’67 Camaro belonging to Terry Clark which was being brought in for a conversion from a tired 350 to a 200-4R performance transmission install and we followed the steps.
The Gearstar Paradigm ShiftFirst, the job is done by one of Gearstar’s’ trained techs who carries thru the entire operation from dismantling the old trans all the way to putting the transmission on a dyno and to final installation. You'll know exactly who handled it every step of the way. The custom install on this Camaro and with all Gearstar’s customer cars is custom made. Many times Gearstar has to fabricate cross members and possibly modify your drive shaft to accommodate the new trans. As I watched the process, I started tallying up just what the parts might be if one had to buy them individually and that included the tranny itself, the cooler, drive shaft, Lokar shift kit, custom cross member (if you’re lucky enough to find one), well, I stopped at $2800. In just parts! That doesn’t include a warranty or the custom fab work, lift, etc.
ConclussionGearstar finished the Camaro and they had set the whole car up. One look under the car and it looked better than when it left the factory. I left thinking ‘ol Zack and his crew must be really proud that not only do they build killer, bulletproof transmissions, but lots of west coast builders are coming to Akron Ohio for their trans. Heck, some of the best around here like: Lobecks, Seme & Son, RDP Motorsport, Corvette Conspiracy are clients. I guess they all can’t be wrong! Why a Gearstar 4L80E?Why a Gearstar 4L80E? A 4L80E is a four-speed overdrive transmission that is the evolutionary counterpart to the TH400 three-speed transmission.
Build both transmissions to handle 600 horsepower and Gearstar will charge you $2,200 for the TH400 and $3,900 for the 4L80E. I just added $1,700 to the drivetrain for one extra 0.75 overdrive gear. Where is the Logic? Where is the logic? It's certainly not monetarily based (nor found in weight savings since the 4L80E is about 35 pounds heavier). But the superior functionality of the electronically controlled transmission with an overdrive gear cannot be argued. While some may not prefer that the 4L80E requires a controller like HGM's Compushift II, I like the fact that it can be easily adjusted and reprogrammed via a hand-held display. Shift pressures, shift points, torque converter lockup, and the overdrive can all be controlled via the Compushift II, giving complete control over the transmission like I've never had before. The advantages and benefits of an overdrive gear that lowers engine rpm and improves fuel economy are easily apparent. Looking for a way to help improve your ride's performance, fuel economy, and driveability? We'll show you how to do just that with a Gearstar 4L80E and Advance Adapter's Atlas 4-Speed Transfer Case. Gearstar 200-4R Overdrive TransmissionWe needed a transmission that could do it all, and support any future engine upgrades without worrying about reliability. Plus, the Nova had to be able to handle long cruises while producing moderate fuel economy and able to boogie down the quarter-mile.
Since the engine was removed, it served as the perfect opportunity to scrap the tired TH350 and lame converter for an all-new transmission. We sourced a Gearstar 200-4R overdrive transmission. Outfitted with their Level III internals and a 10-inch 2,800- to 3,600-stall converter rated for up to 500 hp and 475 lb-ft. It all came shipped complete to our door in a crate and included the Lokar installation kit, ATF transmission fluid, heavy-duty shroud, and deep transmission pan. The 200-4R offered up more response from a dig with its steeper gearing, and the overdrive (0.67:1 ratio) would accept highway cruising with significantly lower rpm. Best of all, the swap required little modification since the overall case length is nearly identical to the TH350 we pulled out, which meant we could reuse our factory driveshaft. During our chat with Mark Walk of Gearstar Performance Transmissions in Akron, Ohio, we learned a lot about these time-proven GM overdrive automatics. These are well engineered transmissions from the factory, however Gearstar knows how to make them better. “These 4L70E transmissions are pretty much automatic overdrives based off of the old Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission,” Walk tells us, “If you don’t know exactly what you are looking for, it’s impossible to tell a 4L70E from a 4L60E or 4L65E. There aren’t any physical differences externally in the case, furthermore, even the cases are still stamped 4L60E.”
“When exceeding the factory ratings of around 450 horsepower and up, you’re going to need some improved performance components in the 4L70E transmission. Those improvement are determined by power, torque, and in addition what you’ll be using the car for. The 4L65E Level II, is our entry level high-performance transmission and it starts at 450 horsepower and 425 pound feet of torque. Consequently, at that point is when you need to start entertaining something that can handle more power.” The 4L70E is a vastly improved version of the 4L60E. However, Walk tells us there’s room for improvement so your 4L70E will last under demanding conditions. While most people want a smooth shift, smooth shifts happen due to slippage, as a result, slippage creates heat. Heat sheds clutch/band friction material in the fluid, which damages seals. You want a firm upshift while having a smooth, unnoticeable downshift. Additionally, upgrading the friction materials in a 4L70E can go a long way in improving it’s durability and power rating. Moreover, GM’s E model automatic overdrives are more versatile and intelligent transmissions. The driver can have direct control of shift timing, wide open throttle up shifts, torque converter lock up apply, and at what MPH this takes place.Source: Upgrading The GM 4L70E Transmissions With Gearstar - Chevy Hardcore
ConclusionThe GM 4L70E transmission is a stout and healthy unit in stock form. We’ve shown you how it is a big improvement from the more common 4L60E and 4L65E. A few improvements in hard parts friction materials and the 4L70E can easily stand it's ground. Managing the type of power that today’s engines are capable of producing while maintaining the benefits of overdrive and electronic shift control.
