Bad Habits That Can Damage Your 4R70w Transmission
A significant number of automatic transmission failures in vehicles are as a result of excessive heat. If you can prevent your car from overheating, you stand a better chance of reaching your 100k mile mark. There's an old saying that if your car starts making too much noise, you should turn up the radio. However, it is not every strange noise you should ignore. There are things people unconsciously do to their vehicles when they drive and even when they are not driving. These things subsequently create problems in their transmission in the long run. These are some of the mistakes you can avoid to extend the life of your 4R70W transmission:
1. Towing or hauling beyond the recommended limit
Understand the suggested weight limit for your vehicle. If your car is not built for towing, then don’t do it. Towing over the recommended limit can cause some problems for your vehicle. It can cause your clutches and bands to slip, which quickly results in the termination of your transmission. One important thing you need to worry about is the heat build-up. Regardless of the make and model of your vehicle, excessive heat can destroy the automatic transmission.
2. Driving fast or not letting go of the gas pedal
It can be fun to be behind the wheel driving fast or taking advantage of a steep incline to accelerate more. But, you might be doing more damage to your transmission that will shorten its lifespan. Failure to take your foot off the gas pedal will almost always lead to an overheated transmission.
In some cases, holding down the gas pedal might seem to be a logical way to get yourself out of a sticky mud situation, but it does have its way of generating heat. Spinning the wheels backward and forward can rapidly create an incredible amount of heat, which will cause your 4R70W automatic transmission to overheat within a very short period.
3. Ignoring transmission problems
What seems like a minor issue like a bad sensor, low fluid, or even a faulty solenoid can rapidly escalate into a much bigger problem which can be very costly. A lot of catastrophic transmission problems can be avoided. You just have to identify the minor problems early enough and tackle them before they become magnanimous.
4. Not doing regular checks to maintain the cooling system
As you continue to use the vehicle, the transmission fluid will be contaminated over time due to exposure to external elements and normal wear. Also, the fluid will have to go through multiple cooling cycles that break it down. When this happens, the fluid will lose its ability to lubricate the internal areas of the 4R70W transmission appropriately. And as a result of this, there will be accelerated wear and eventual failure of the transmission.
Trucks used for work related purposes and other vehicles can sometimes be overworked. It takes a toll on the car, particularly on the transmission. Regularly watch how you operate your vehicle and do checks on it periodically.
