How To Become A Pilot

If you are considering becoming a pilot, it is crucial to understand the educational process and choose the learning pathway that best suits you. First, you need to decide what pilot you’d like to be. Pilot training varies based on the aircraft you plan to fly and the types of certificates you need. Here, we’ll walk you through the steps you need to follow to become a pilot.

Research Pilot Training School And Programs

You need to know the type of training programs being offered and which is the most suitable for you. For instance, do you want a Commercial Pilot License (CPL), or do you need a Private Pilot License (PPL)? Do you plan to work for an airline? If yes, an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) may be right for you. Do you wish to achieve a university degree at the same time too? Or do you plan to join the army? You need to take into account what your aviation goals ‘are before choosing a school and program that’s right for you.

Visit The Flight School

When visiting the school, try to tour the facilities, see the fleet, and meet and chat with trainers. This will help you know what to expect and the school’s quality of training.

Apply for FAA Student Pilot Certificate

You must enroll for a student pilot certificate via the FAA’s Integrated Airman Certification & Rating Application (IACRA) website. You will need this student pilot certificate to fly solo during your training, but you don’t need it to start flying lessons.

Apply For FAA Medical Certificate

Before you can fly an airplane professionally, you must meet the basic medical requirements. In addition, you must apply for a medical certificate through an Aeromedical Examiner (AME) and meet higher medical standards.

Start Flight Training Lessons

Begin to take flight training lessons and work towards getting the aeronautical knowledge and pilot training experience you need to become a pilot.

Pass Pilot Knowledge Test

During your pilot flight training, you must take and pass the FAA pilot knowledge test. In addition, you must receive approval from your flight instructor to be eligible for the test.

Pass Pilot Practical Exam

Undertake an exam with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) to earn your FAA pilot certificate. This exam consists of an oral and a flight aspect. You will be a pilot once you complete and pass the exam.

Start Your Career

After passing the exam to become a pilot, you are eligible to start your career with an airline.
