With decades of experience, Mopar and the NAG1 transmission conquer mountains and the street. A leader in aftermarket parts, MOPAR is famous for its ease of installation and quality. NAG1 and other transmissions from Gearstar keep your Jeep or Challenger focused on the end game.
While these transmissions are respected, there are five aspects of the well-used Nag1 that every Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep owner should be aware of. From which vehicles use this technology to different problems, there is a lot to be aware of.
What does NAG1 mean and where is it used?
Nag1 stands for New Automatic Gearbox. Generation One. Despite being released in the mid-2000s, General Motors sticks with the first generation to this day.
These transmissions are found in:
- 2006 to present AWD Jeep Grand Cherokees
- 2005 to present Charger, Magnum, 300C, and Challenger models
- Some Chrysler vehicles after acquisition by Daimler-Benz in 2005
This component comes in different names such as the WA580 or W5A580. Like most first-generation technologies, there are still issues despite several upgrades over the years.
Differences from Older Transmissions
The NAG 1 incorporates more electronics than other models. For instance, the transmission does not use a traditional speed sensor but the ABS collects speed information which is then broadcast to the car. The transmission uses this speed information to schedule gear shifts.
Gera ratios that are even slightly off may cause the car to inappropriately register a shift. Your car may not shift appropriately, resulting in inappropriate RPMs at any speed.
Torque Converter Issues
The NAG 1 transmission contains a lockup clutch in the torque converter. This adds complexity. As with most technology, more complexity breads more problem.
This configuration leads to transmission issues despite allowing for faster and smoother gear changes. The torque converter may not hold correctly when improperly maintained.
Water Entering through the Dipstick Tube
The dipstick allows you to measure your oil level accurately. However, as with most high-performance vehicles, parts can easily break under enough stress. A defective or broken O-Ring causes water to enter the engine compartment.
Water in any transmission leads to leaks and further complications if left unchecked. Luckily, you can upgrade the O-Ring to avoid these problems.
Benefits of the NAG1 transmission
While suffering from some of the issues of a first-generation technology, the NAG1 is also a robust transmission. This transmission was built to withstand the power of a HEMI engine.
Among the benefits you can enjoy are:
- Increased gas mileage
- Increased shift control
- Lower maintenance costs
- Increased service life
Among 5 speed automatic transmissions, the MOPAR NAG1 continues to hold its own. You will benefit if you remain on the lookout for potential issues.
Where can I find a NAG1 transmission?
The MOPAR Hemi NAG1 transmission offers many potential benefits. However, Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge owners need to be on the lookout for problems that can quickly cascade into a costly fix. As a first-generation technology, these transmissions will only continue to improve.
