The November 2026 issue of All Chevy Performance takes readers inside our shop to follow a Level 4 6L80E from bare case to finished transmission. Writer Barry Kluczyk spent time with our builders in Ohio and photographed each upgrade that lets GM's six-speed hold up behind a high-output engine.

Why the stock 6L80E needs help at higher power
GM launched the 6L80E for the 2006 model year in trucks and performance cars, Corvette included. It was a clean-sheet design and it holds up well in stock form. Add a lot more power and the weak spots show up fast: clutch packs start to slip under hard acceleration, input shafts can break, and a worn pump pressure regulator valve causes erratic line pressure that usually feels like converter shudder. Heat and burnt fluid make all of it worse.
"When you beef up the known weak spots, you'll have a transmission with the capability to match the full potential of your powertrain."
Ryan Steele, Gearstar
What goes into a Level 4 build
- A redesigned pump pressure regulator valve with a larger stem, plus a drilled bypass and check ball, to stop the pressure swings behind converter shudder
- An upgraded boost valve and sleeve and a heavy-duty pump slide spring, so line pressure stays steady at high rpm and under load
- A Sonnax billet aluminum piston in the 3-5-R and 1-2-3-4 drum, replacing the stock cast part that's prone to cracking
- Raybestos GPZ high-capacity frictions and steels, built to take more heat and stress than stock clutches
- Welded, cryo-treated hubs and hardened billet intermediate shafts
- An air-leak test on the drum and a clutch pack clearance check on every build
- A new Yank torque converter included with every unit
"Aftermarket upgrades, such as those incorporated by Gearstar, are helping ensure the six-speed gearbox stands up to all the power enthusiasts can push through it."

Level 3 vs. Level 4
Both include a Yank converter. Every Gearstar transmission is put together by one builder and dyno tested before it ships.
