Transmission Slip Yoke and measurements

Transmission Slip Yoke and measurements
we are going to talk about some transmission slip yokes.
When you are installing a new transmission, it is a perfect opportunity to replace the slip yoke. There are many different options of slip yokes, and it is very important to know what size U-Joint you have or are planning to run.
If you do not have the correct size journal for the slip yoke it will not allow the output shaft seal to seal around the yoke. This will create a leak coming from the rear of the transmission. A perfect example is an AOD slip yoke journal measures at 1.499" while the 4R70W journal measures at 1.598". Yes, the yoke will fit on the output shaft but because of the size difference of the journal you can't use an AOD yoke on a 4R70W .
Once you have determined what the U-Joint size is now is the next question. How much movement should the transmission yoke have? A slip yoke should typically have about 1" to 1.5" of movement to allow enough movement between the transmission and differential during suspension travel.
I have attached a chart from Sonnax to help identify what size U-Joint that you have.
