About 200R4 Transmission
The GM TH200-4R (more commonly known as the 200R4 transmission or 2004R transmission) is a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission produced by General Motors from 1981 to 1990. Introduced to meet federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, it was GM’s first modern automatic overdrive designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce engine RPMs compared to older three-speed transmissions. Adding a highly efficient fourth gear, it allowed drivers to maintain highway cruise speeds while reducing engine wear and cutting fuel costs over time.
The Holy Grail of Classic Car Retrofits
The 2004R transmission is widely considered the "holy grail" for classic car retrofits due to its compact physical dimensions. It can be installed in many classic cars that originally used a Powerglide two-speed or TH-350 three-speed without requiring major modifications. Because it is overall the same length as the TH350, it is often recommended for applications where fewer modifications are needed compared to other overdrive transmissions. This compatibility helps vehicle owners save significantly on custom installation costs.
Unmatched Engine Versatility and the Universal Bellhousing
A major benefit of the 200-4R is its universal bolt pattern bellhousing, which allows it to adapt to a variety of Chevy, Buick, Olds, and Pontiac engines. This design eliminates the need for expensive aftermarket adapter plates when switching between mid-size and full-size rear-wheel-drive GM platforms. This factory versatility is why the 200-4R was featured in high-performance vehicles such as the Buick Grand National and Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, proving its capability behind potent V6 and V8 engine options.
200r4 Transmission Effective Rear Gear Ratio
The internal architecture of the 200-4R features well-spaced gear ratios designed to optimize vehicle performance:
1st Gear: 2.74:1
2nd Gear: 1.57:1
3rd Gear: 1.00:1
Overdrive: 0.69:1
The 0.69 overdrive ratio lowers engine RPMs during highway cruising, allowing drivers to run larger rear axle ratios for better off-the-line acceleration without sacrificing streetability or highway fuel economy.
Because it is a non-computer-controlled transmission, it relies on a mechanical TV cable to manage shift functions and fluid pressures. Depending on your carburetor setup, a TV cable corrector kit may be required during installation.
The Gearstar Difference: Custom-Built 2004R Transmissions for Sale
The 200R4 transmissions on this page are custom-built and sold directly by Gearstar Performance Transmissions, not generic remanufactured units or outsourced builds. With over 25 years of experience, Gearstar builds every 2004R from the ground up in-house. We do not mass-produce units or pull from shelf stock. Every transmission is assembled by a single master builder from start to finish to ensure consistency, precision, and accountability.
Every case is completely disassembled, run through an industrial parts washer, and media blasted to a raw aluminum finish. This allows a full inspection for cracks or defects before we apply a fresh coat of paint. Each setup is custom-tailored to the customer's specific vehicle application and intended use. Before leaving our shop, the complete package is tested on one of our 3 transmission dynos for a simulated 100 miles, and we send a custom dyno video directly to the customer.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2004R Transmission
What’s the difference between 700R4 and 200R4?
The biggest differences come down to compatibility, weight, and overdrive ratio. The 2004R has a universal bellhousing that fits Chevy, Buick, Olds, and Pontiac engines, while the 700R4 is Chevy-only.
For a full breakdown of how these transmissions compare in real-world builds, including gearing behavior, strength, and installation differences, you can check out our guide to the two.
Is a 2004R a good transmission?
Yes, it is an excellent transmission for performance applications when upgraded with heavy-duty components. While stock factory units were limited by early design constraints, modern performance modifications completely eliminate those weaknesses, making it highly reliable for classic car swaps.
How much horsepower can a 2004R transmission handle?
A stock 200-4R is limited and not suited for high-performance use, but a properly built unit changes that significantly. Depending on build level and internal upgrades, a performance 2004R can handle roughly 400 to 750 horsepower, depending on the level.
What cars came with a 200-4R transmission?
The 200-4R was utilized across mid-size and full-size rear-wheel-drive GM platforms from 1981 to 1990. It was used in performance cars like the Buick Grand National and Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, as well as various Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Cadillac Fleetwood models.
